Dr. Charles J. Briscoe Achievement Scholarship

The Dr. Charles J. Briscoe Achievement Scholarship was established in September 2003 by Pastor Delmar White, in honor of Dr. Briscoe, who served as pastor of Paseo Baptist Church for 35 years.

Dr. Briscoe believed in the transformative power of learning as he was the first Africa-American President of the Kansas City, Missouri School District's Board of Education.

This scholarship is a lasting legacy that honors and celebrates his life of service to others and contributes to the educational opportunities of our students.

The Dr. Charles J. Briscoe Achievement Scholarship recognizes, rewards, and assists Paseo Baptist Church students’ academic accomplishments and pursuits.

Who Can Apply

  1. Must be a member of Paseo Baptist Church.
  2. High school students enrolled in college level courses (minimum of 12 hours per semester)
  3. Graduating high school seniors
  4. College students in undergraduate programs (minimum of 12 hours per semester)
  5. Adults in trade or vocational programs are eligible to apply for an award

Requirements

  1. Must complete the Dr. Charles J. Briscoe Achievement Scholarship application.
  2. Minimum grade point average of 2.0
  3. Acceptance at a college/university or vocational school
  4. Church, school and community participation
  5. Two letters of recommendation — one personal and one academic–on letterhead paper
  6. An essay response to questions relative to their Christian experience.
  7. If you have not attended an institution of higher learning in the last 10 years, the award will be paid after successful completion of one semester.

Academic Achievement Scholarship

Barbara T. Moten Academic Achievement Scholarship recognizes, rewards, and assists students’ academic accomplishments and pursuits in an undergraduate college degree program.

Who Can Apply

  1. Must be a member of Paseo Baptist Church.
  2. College students in undergraduate programs (minimum of 12 hours per semester)
  3. College students who have completed at least one year of college

Requirements

  1. Must complete both the Dr. Charles J. Briscoe Achievement Scholarship application and the Barbara Taylor Moten Academic Achievement Scholarship insert.
  2. A current college student enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program
  3. An essay response of 300 words (not exceeding 500 words) to the subject found in the application.
  4. Students may reapply each successive year of enrollment, however, this award can only be won twice during undergraduate collegiate studies
  5. Grade Point Average of 3.0

How to apply

  2. 2Get the Application:

    Download the application by clicking the below download application button

    Request an application be sent to you by mail by contacting the Paseo Baptist Church Office at 816-921-6842.

  3. 3Gather Documents:

    Time-sensitive. Request your academic record, letters of recommendations as specified in the application, and begin drafting your essay as soon as possible to ensure that you have enough time to submit your application.

    Request Academic Record.  To obtain an academic record (transcript) from a school, you generally need to contact your school's registrar's office or admissions office. Follow up regularly to ensure request has been processed--be persistent but courteous.

    Letter of Recommendation.  Request letters (as specified in the application) from teachers, counselors, or employers who can speak to your abilities and achievements.

    Essay.  Draft strong essay meeting the requirements in the application.

  4. 4Complete the Application:

    Applicant must complete the Dr. Charles J. Briscoe Achievement Scholarship essay if you are a high school graduate.

    If applying for the Barbara Taylor Moten Academic Achievement Scholarship you must complate both essays.

    Make sure you read the application carefully, fill it out completely. Provide accurate and complete information, ensure all required documents are attached to the application as specified. Review your application for any errors or omissions before submitting.

  5. 5Meet the Submission Deadline:

    Submit your application before the deadline to ensure it is considered.
